Saixa Deníssova
Sasha Denisova is a Ukrainian playwright and theatre director. With a career rooted in the defence of freedom of expression and human rights, her work has been profoundly shaped by the war in Ukraine and its human consequences.
In 2022, together with actor Aleksei Yudnikov, she was forced into exile following the Russian invasion, beginning a residency within the Artists at Risk (AR) programme.
This is where the journey into adolescence—and into an entire life—begins. Speaking about the war and wishing for victory.
Ma mare i la invasió total
During her stay, Denisova wrote and directed My Mother and the Total Invasion, a powerful play based on the real-life experience of her mother, who chose to remain in Kyiv despite the bombings. The work premiered at the CCCB and was later presented in Reus and Santa Coloma de Gramenet, becoming a brave and moving artistic denunciation of everyday resistance in times of war.
With a lucid and deeply committed theatrical voice, Denisova conceives theatre as a tool for memory and resistance, from a feminist and radically human perspective. Her residency in Barcelona has been not only a creative refuge, but also a platform from which to continue raising her voice on behalf of all those who are persecuted for their art.
