Aleksei Iúdnikov

Aleksei was living in Russia when Putin decided to invade Ukraine, his native country. In 1999, he graduated from the Acting Department of RATI-GITIS, in the class of Mark Zakharov. He has taken part in festivals such as New Drama and New Play.

He has performed at Teatr.doc in the following productions: Light My Fire by Sasha Denisova (directed by Yuri Muravitsky); Alconovelas, a play by L. Mulmenko (directed by Lera Surkova); Carrier: Favourites (directed by Alexey Yudnikov); Gardeners – as Yermolai (directed by Andrey Moguchiy); and Cowards by Elena Nevezhina, based on a play by Pavel Pryazhko (Centre for Drama and Directing & Teatr.doc).

Humour has a catalytic effect in overcoming tragic events. However, when everyday life is disrupted, people go on thinking it still exists.

In 2012, for the play Light My Fire, he was awarded the Golden Mask in the “Experiment” category.

At the CDR (Centre for Drama and Directing), he took part in Dusty Day (directed by Sasha Denisova), Sforza (Tsim, Sasha Denisova), Harry on Fire (Teatr.doc, directed by Sasha Denisova), Sea. Pines (a play by Mikhail Ugarov, directed by Sasha Denisova, Theatre of Nations), Hermione (directed by Sasha Denisova), and Six Ribs of Anger (Kommuna Warszawa, 2022, Poland).

After leaving Russia, thanks to Artists at Risk (AR), he was able to complete a three-month residency in Helsinki. He then continued his artistic research in Barcelona for a further six months, collaborating with Ukrainian playwright, director, novelist and screenwriter Sasha Denisova on the creation of the play My Mother and the Total Invasion.

In this play, Aleksei Yudnikov performs all the roles. It is a work about the lives of civilians living day to day in the midst of conflict. The story centres on Olga Ivanova, the mother of playwright Sasha Denisova, who has chosen to remain in the Ukrainian capital despite the invasion.
