OPEN CALL

We are pleased to announce the first public call for ecologists at risk from Latin America and the Caribbean. It is aimed at artists, activists or cultural professionals who face significant threats due to their environmental and ecological commitment.

Applicants should fill out the form at this link. For those who require more digital security, please consult this option. Please do not attempt to contact us through other channels.

Please note that only applications that address current and significant risks at the intersection of ecology, art and culture will be considered. Other inquiries will not be responded to.

An international jury will select ER Residents for short and medium-term residencies, following background checks, risk assessments and capacity analyses by the ER Secretariat. The jury is appointed by the co-directors of Perpetuum Mobile (PM), the entity that manages ER, with the advice of the ER International Advisory Board.

We invite all people working at the intersection of ecology, art and culture in Latin America and the Caribbean to share this Public Call to support environmental defenders and indigenous communities at risk.

Ecologists at Risk (ER) is a residency platform for people at risk at the intersection of ecology and culture. ER supports environmental defenders at high risk, whose life and/or work consists of sustaining, protecting or defending natural ecosystems through cultural or artistic practices.

What is Ecologists At Risk (ER)?

The Ecologists at Risk (ER) initiative was launched by Perpetuum Mobile (PM) in 2019, as part of its Artists at Risk (AR) platform. Since 2013, Artists at Risk (AR) has geographically relocated and provided material support to over 940 cultural professionals in high-risk situations, in collaboration with over 300 organizations worldwide. We hope that our experience will contribute to making the ER platform have a significant impact in the field of ecology and environmental advocacy.

Through local knowledge, research, and public calls, the ER network identifies and connects with environmental defenders at risk. After background checks, risk assessments, and capacity analyses, selected ER Residents are provided with resources and short- to medium-term relocations to ER safe residences.

These regional (and occasionally intercontinental) relocations to ER-linked safe spaces offer rest and respite, as well as opportunities to continue their work on ecological causes. ER residencies are usually managed by specialist organisations that collaborate with ER to create projects that address ecological challenges from different perspectives, often working directly with local communities.

Artist at Risk and Ecologists at Risk are two initiatives of Perpetuum Mobilε (PM), an international NGO that merges art, engaged practice and research. It acts as a conduit and engine for rethinking historical, theoretical and practical paradigms in fields that often develop within separate institutional frameworks and territories. PM has developed long-term thematic platforms, such as The Re-Aligned Project, Perpetual Pavilion, Perestroika Project, The Arts Assembly, Artists at Risk (AR) and Ecologists at Risk (ER).

Perpetuum Mobile (PM) has received several awards, including the State Prize of Finland and the European Parliament’s Praemium European Citizens’ Prize.
